Among other eight Virginia Tech students, double major Neuroscience student Jonathan Huaman is elected as training lieutenant at Virginia Tech Recue Squad.

Michael Geary (first on the left, first row) has been elected to serve as chief of the Virginia Tech Rescue Squad.

Geary, a junior wildlife conservation major from Richmond, Virginia, is one of nine undergraduate students who will serve as officers for the 2017-18 academic year.

Officers serve one-year terms and are elected by the rescue squad’s all-student membership. 

In addition to Geary, the 2016-17 officers are:

  • Tyler Mosier, administrative captain, a senior from Columbia, Maryland, mechanical engineering;
  • Aram Hudson, communications lieutenant, a senior from Fairfax, Virginia, biological systems engineering;
  • Amanda Wallace, personnel lieutenant, a senior from Yorktown, Virginia, creative writing and literature and language;
  • Nicholas Troitino, equipment lieutenant, a junior from Elk Creek, Virginia, biological sciences;
  • Matthew Heindrichs, special operations lieutenant, a junior from Stafford, Virginia, mechanical engineering;
  • Jonathan Huaman, training lieutenant, a junior from Sterling, Virginia, neuroscience and psychology;
  • Michael Scheunemeyer, vehicles lieutenant, a senior from Woodbridge, Virginia, human nutrition, foods, and exercise; and
  • Jack Shepard, operations captain, a senior from Manassas, Virginia, mechanical engineering,

The Virginia Tech Rescue Squad has served the university community since 1969 and is the oldest collegiate rescue squad in Virginia and the second oldest in the nation. 

The squad has 40 student members who perform the same functions of a municipal rescue squad and handle about 1,200 calls per year.
