Stephanie DeLuca, PhD, is a developmental psychologist who works to advance both adult and pediatric innovative neurorehabilitation treatment techniques. Rehabilitation science is an expanding field, and DeLuca’s research interests include the relative efficacy of differing therapies that have been scientifically evaluated and validated, the effects of therapeutic dosages on patient outcomes, the combination of rehabilitation with various medical treatments, and the documentation of therapy-induced neuroplasticity in response to therapeutic efforts, especially in children.
DeLuca develops new rehabilitation treatments and tests them through randomized clinical trials. In collaboration with Sharon Ramey, she developed a pediatric constraint-induced movement therapy protocol that initially proved to be efficacious in a crossover randomized clinical trial and later in a three-site randomized clinical trial. She has since served as lead author on a manual for ACQUIREc therapy, a systematic approach to pediatric constraint-induced movement therapy. Since joining the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute, DeLuca codirects the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute Neuromotor Research Clinic, which is dedicated to delivering on the promise of evidence-based neurorehabilitation. She carries out National Institutes of Health–funded research for developing, expanding, and validating enhanced and effective neurorehabilitation protocols for treating such conditions as cerebral palsy.
