Wire & Rewire: Neural Basis of Development and Plasticity in the Sensory Cortices

To build an appropriate representation of the sensory stimuli around the world, the developing sensory cortices are wired according to both intrinsic factors and external sensory patterns and have the capability to quickly respond to altered sensory experience by circuit reorganization. In my past work, I have applied computational modelling, electrophysiology, pharmacological and genetic manipulation, as well as 2-photon microscopy to dissect the rodent auditory and visual cortices from systems to molecular level to understand the synaptic basis of sensory cortical development and plasticity. My current and future works focus on neuroplasticity in the adult visual cortex, studying how the brain employs various cellular and molecular mechanisms in the local environment and across the brain areas to maintain a fine balance between stability and plasticity.
