Many Neuroscience students will pursue independent mentored research at some stage of their Virginia Tech education. Most undergraduate students seek out for research opportunities in their sophomore year and spend 10 or more hours weekly in laboratories of VT faculty members. The goal is to educate students on the importance of trying to understand brain function and behavior in a mechanistic, hypothesis driven way.

Research can be conducted for credit at the 2000 and 4000 level. All students have the opportunity to present their research in a number of forums, including departmental retreats, the Virginia Tech research day, national and international meetings. In consultation with their research mentors, students are encouraged to submit their works to peer-reviewed publications.
